Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station Historic Site commemorates the heroic efforts of the United States Life-Saving Service, an organization formed in 1848 to rescue shipwrecked mariners. The site features an original lifesaving station, built in 1874, and a second station constructed in 1911, as well as numerous outbuildings and an abounding shipwreck museum. Visitors to the site can listen to stories of historic sea rescues, participate in knot-tying classes and view the array of artifacts, photographs, documents and uniforms that are on display. This fascinating site is located in the Outer Banks, 20 miles south of Nags Head.
